Description

General Tso’s is a classic Chinese dish, typically served with chicken. It has a sweet and savory sauce that is usually made with soy sauce, garlic and ginger, and is served with steamed vegetables. This Instant Pot version of General Tso’s is incredibly easy to make and is ready in no time. The chicken is cooked in the Instant Pot, making it tender and juicy. The sauce is made with ingredients you probably already have in your pantry, and the vegetables are steamed in the Instant Pot for a healthy and delicious meal.

Prep Time

This recipe takes about 10 minutes to prepare. You’ll need to cut the chicken into cubes, mix the sauce ingredients together, and prep the vegetables. The rest of the time is hands off, as the Instant Pot does most of the work.

Cook Time

The cook time will depend on how large your chicken cubes are and how thick or thin you cut your vegetables. Typically, the recipe takes around 10 minutes to cook.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 cups vegetables of your choice (such as broccoli, peppers, carrots)

Instructions

1. Cut the chicken into cubes and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, mix together the soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes. Set aside.

3. Place the chicken in the Instant Pot and pour the sauce over the chicken. Close the lid and set the valve to sealing. Cook on high pressure for 10 minutes.

4. Once the cooking time is done, release the pressure and open the lid. In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch and water until it forms a paste. Add the paste to the Instant Pot and stir to combine. Close the lid and set the valve to sealing. Cook on high pressure for an additional 3 minutes.

5. Once the cooking time is done, release the pressure and open the lid. Add the vegetables to the Instant Pot and stir to combine. Close the lid and set the valve to sealing. Cook on high pressure for 1 minute.

6. Once the cooking time is done, release the pressure and open the lid. Serve the General Tso’s with steamed white or brown rice.

Recipe Tips

For a spicier version of General Tso’s, add more red pepper flakes or substitute the red pepper flakes with chili flakes. If you prefer a sweeter version, add more honey or brown sugar. You can also add some hoisin sauce for a richer flavor. For a healthier version, use low sodium soy sauce and reduce the amount of honey and sugar. For a gluten-free version, use tamari or coconut aminos instead of soy sauce.
