This Ham and Beans Instant Pot Recipe is one of the easiest and most satisfying meals you can make. It's packed with protein, fiber, and flavor, and it's so simple to throw together. The beans are cooked in a flavorful broth with a ham hock, onion, garlic, and a few spices. The result is a hearty, comforting meal that's sure to please even the pickiest eaters. Serve it with some crusty bread and a side salad for a complete dinner.

Prep Time

This recipe takes about 15 minutes of prep time to get everything ready and in the pot. This includes chopping the onion, measuring out the spices, and getting the ham hock ready.

Cook Time

This recipe cooks in the Instant Pot for about 45 minutes. This includes the time for the pot to come to pressure and for the pressure to release. You can also let the pressure release naturally, which will add about 15 minutes to the cook time.

Ingredients

- 1 pound dried great northern beans
- 1 ham hock
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 2 bay leaves
- 6 cups chicken broth
- Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Rinse and sort the beans, then place them in the Instant Pot. Add the ham hock, onion, garlic, oregano, paprika, cumin, and bay leaves. Pour the chicken broth over the top and stir to combine.
2. Secure the lid on the Instant Pot and turn the valve to the sealing position. Select the "manual" setting and set the timer for 45 minutes. Once the timer is up, let the pressure release naturally for 15 minutes, then quick release the remaining pressure.
3. When the pressure has released, open the Instant Pot and remove the ham hock. Pull off any meat from the bone and add it back to the pot. Discard the bone. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed. Serve warm with crusty bread, if desired.

Equipment

- Instant Pot
- Knife
- Cutting board
- Measuring cups and spoons

Notes

This recipe can easily be doubled if you'd like to make a larger batch. This will require a larger Instant Pot and more time to come to pressure.

Recipe Tips

- Be sure to rinse and sort your beans before cooking them. This will help remove any debris or dirt that may be on them.
- If you'd like a little more texture in your beans, you can mash about a cup of them with a potato masher before serving. This will thicken the broth and give the beans a creamy texture.
- If you don't have a ham hock, you can use a ham bone or a few slices of diced ham.
